Temp Gauge Inaccurate?

My Case 350 track loader was running hot on me. I took out the radiator and had it boiled out. I am pretty sure that was my problem. However, while the radiator was out, I was performing some other maintenance and ended up busting my temp gauge. I put a new gauge in it, fired it up after I got the radiator back in, and ran it for about 20 minutes. The temp gauge barely got over 110. I put the old gauge in the radiator, it showed about 140. Placing my hand on the block and head showed a cooler temp on the head. After I shut the machine off. The temp on the gauge did go up to about 140. I was just wondering if a 30 - 40 degree difference from the head to the radiator was normal? Is it possible that it is running this cool? I plan on running her more this weekend to see what it does. Just going to keep a real close eye on her.

Thanks
Jon

I would have thought the coolant in the radiator would be a lower temp than the engine block or head. I guess it would depend on where in the radiator you measured the temp. If you measured right at the radiator inlet then I would think this would show a higher temp.

110 sounds a little cool. For that matter so does 140. My 188 diesel in my 450 calls for a 180 degree thermostat. I noticed that the previous owner removed the thermostat, but I'll be putting it back in after I finish the engine rebuild. I feel that its almost as important for the engine to run warm enough as it is not to run too warm.

Best of luck,
John 1968 Case 450
