I have an early 450 JD crwaler loader, runs well, but it is supposed to have some sort of assist for the steering clutches, and they must not be working because I have to pull quite hard on the levers to get them to disengage and brake. The tractor steers fine. the 2 little hydrailic cylinders are on the top of the transmission, the system is full of oil, and the cylinders are not leaking oil. any ideas?

thanks
Dave

I haven't seen an early 450 power steer work worth a hoot in a long time.. If the reservoir is full and stays full, you probably have a problem with the pump making pressure.. If the reservoir goes down and you can't see where it's going. It's probably going into the engine oil.. The pump is mounted on the front cover of engine and the reservoir is above it attached to the radiator support bracket.. The filter behind the grill is for HLR transmission. When the steering is working properly, the levers will quiver when you pull each one back. They're not the smoothest system that was ever made, but they work..sometime.

Is this resevoir you are speaking of in the engine compartmetn or elsewhere> see psting below as to what IO already tried

any more help is apreciated

Dave

I replaced the filter with new, topped the system and still no change. it steers easier to the left than the right.

Is it possible that the lines going to the small cylinders on top of the transmission need to be opened and bled? I can't feel an fluid or movement in them when I put my hands on the hoses

thanks
Dave

There should be a steering filter behind the grille. Try replacing that and see if it wakes up.
