HELP - KOMATSU D21 HAS NO POWER

hello fellas,
I have a komatsu D21p-6 dozer, it doesn't seem to have any power. When I went to push a small hill of dirt, like 2 or three whell barrows full,it stopped the machine dead in its tracks.
I have seen an old case 310 diesel, and what that can push, I would think this should push about the same. I believe the case is about 33HP, the D21 is about 40HP. On the D21, the engine seems to run fine, even under load the engine is fine, it is like thier is no power from the tranny. It is a hydrastatic trans.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

If the engine stays running and the tractor won't move, it could possibly be in the trans. Does the transmission whine while it is "stalled" against the pile? If so this could be a relief valve dumping hi pressure fluid. The relief could also be broken dumping pressure long before it is supposed to, not allowing it to make the trans work. Either way it sounds like a complete pressure check is in order for the transmission fluid circuits, and don't forget to test the charge pump if it has one, because if the charge pump is scrap, the rest of the trans won't work right. I am going to do a pressure test as soon as I can. The gauge I have is in PSI/Bars ? The book nots pressure in, If i remember correctly klg/cm ? so I need to figure out the conversion. Also I don't if my gauge has the right fittings. Any idea where I can get the right ones, not too expensive.

Can anyone tell me how well it should push ?

If you look on the side of the engine where the fuel pump is you will see a small hand wheel. That is the priming pump for the fuel system. The fuel line from the tank connects to the bottom of that pump by way of a banjo bolt. It has a 3/4" head. Take it out and there should be a strainer inside the bolt.

I believe if you clean out that strainer you will find your horse power comes back.

Was just out today on a D31 with the same complaint. The owner had installed an in line filter before the priming pump with out ever knowing that strainer was there.

Thanks Bentwrench, I will take a look at that also as soon as I have a chance. I took apart the rear clutch housing, the left one, it appears to be caked with grease. I am going to clean that out, check the right one also, once I get it back together, check that fuel screener you mention. It sounds easy enough to do, foolish if I don't.

But I don't think my problem is engine related, it doesn't sound like it goes under strain, or starving for fuel or air, I think it might be more of something like a clutch problem, or not enough pressure in the system. I am hoping for something inexpensive and easy.

If you have any other thoughts, I would really appreciate them. I am going to keep a list ( like the fuel screen) of things to check once I am finished with the clutch packs.
