Hi folks. While working on my 40C that I recently aquired. A few things seem odd and some need attention. The machine has a 4 roller bottom and small or standard idlers on it. But when the tracks got new pins and bushings they added a extra link and grouser. Now the idlers are way out at the end of adjustment and the tracks sag. Is there a reason to add the extra link? will it cause the chain and sprocket to be of the hunting type? Now the problem. It looks like they had a problem with one of the bushings and broke a link and cracked the bushing. Should I try to weld the link or should I replace it with a master? Also while replacing it should I remove the extra link? Any help will be appreciated. Chuck

Chuck,
A 4 roller crawler with standard front idler should have 31 links, with oversize idler it should have 32 links. It will not hurt anything to leave the extra link in, you just won't have any adjustment left. If I had it apart, I would take the extra link out.
You won't have any trouble welding the link, but a cracked bushing needs to be replaced, it really can't be welded successfully and hold.

Lavoy, Thanks for the reply. This machine has 32 links right now. I think perhaps I will remove the damaged link and make it a master. I"ve never had a machine this small before. It"s nice to be able to lift and manhandle most of the parts. I"ve completed most all the mechanical repairs on this now. Once I"m satisfied with the track condition I only need to deal with a damaged hydro cyl and one side of the grill. The previous owner had some problems seeing and all of his machines got pretty banged up. Chuck
