A shuttle shift will give you For and Rev and something else to vary speeds. A HyStat will give you a variable For and Rev from stop to full speed. A shuttle will have hydraulic clutch packs for F&R a HyStat will have a closed loop piston pump and motor. A closed loop system can pump oil in either direction to the motor for forward and reverse and increase output for more speed.

Jody: Hydrostatic has a pedal for forward and reverse with no shifting. Shuttle shifting is usually done with variable speed pulleys. I have a hydrostatic garden tractor and my dad had a Craftman shuttle shift. Once you have driven the hydrostatic, you won"t go back to the shift. The engine went out on mine, which had the Tecumseh overhead valves. I ordered the Briggs-Stratton V 18. I sure do like the Briggs-Stratton alot better. Bolens should have put it on when they built the tractor.
