How hard is it to reseal or repack hydraulic cylinders on a Case 450 loader? I"m planning on doing all my cylinders because the loader has set for 10 years and all leak whether a little or a lot. I know I need an adjustable gland nut wrench. Would I be better of to let a repair shop reseal the cylinders?

Hey Brian, if you buy a gland wrench go ahead and spend the extra to get a quality one made by OTC. Thier in the $80 range but well worth it if you run into one of the glands that's expecially tight. I say this because they will stand up to the impact force of using a Swench with it to break the gland loose. I've done several cylinders in the past few months where the gland was too tight to get loose by hand. On the first one I didn't know if it would work, but it was worth trying to keep from having to pull the cylinder, so I put one of the offsets on my 3/4 drive Swench and used it. It took two pops and the gland broke loose and backed right out. If you don't know what a Swench is do a search and it'll come up in back discussions. Once you get you one you'll never know how you got along without it. Good luck.

Interesting, does Case make their own seal kits? Will the dealer be able to get you the kits without disassembling the cylinders first?

After pondering these questions contact a good aftermarket parts supplier that specializes in Case construction & utility equipment. Go to Google and type in "Case 450 parts" and click on the first link that comes up.

It's not hard to replace the seals and o-rings once you get into the cylinder, probably going to have a rather large nut or bolt to take off the end of the shaft when you get the cylinder apart, I have had Case cylinders that I had to weld a bar on the gland so I could hit it with a hammer to get it broke loose, most are not that bad but you do run into those occasionally.
