JD450C reverser recall

I read some time back that there had been a recall on the reverser for the JD450C crawler. I believe the problem was that when in neutral the crawler may start moving. I bought a 450C about a year ago and mine has that problem. I can put it in neutral and when I start to get out of the seat it takes off. After repositioning the reverser it usually sits still. Does anyone know if I can still get this fixed under the recall? Any information is appreciated.

JD450 and 2010 reverser recall in reply to RussT, 05-04-2005 06:55:40
I did MANY of them when I worked for a Deere dealer. The recall involves all 450 series up to the "C" series, and also all the older 2010 crawlers that have the HL-R hydraulic transmission. It goes by serial number, and as far as I know, there is no expiration date on it. It all came about because of a class-action against Deere Company that involved several safety issues on many machines. One being the HL-R transmission taking off while in neutral, an another involved farm tractors that lost all steering and brakes when the engine stalled (.e.g the 2520, 3020, 4020, etc.) and also the lack of emergency/parking brakes. As the other guy mentioned, the HL-R update included several items depending on age and amount of linkage wear. Finished result was an "absolute" neutral position in the four speed gear/range transmission along with a wider neutral slot in the hydraulic shift valve for the HL-R trans.

RussT,
Please be careful. I posted over a year ago about one I wanted to test drive at an auction up the road. Having never operated one, I called the lot mechanic to start it up. It was cold so he hooked up his battery leads from his service truck and stood on the ground and reached in to start the loader. Throttle was at or near full and machine came to life imediately and threw itself into reverse. Rammed into his nice F-450 service truck and proceeded to start pushing it across the lot until he reached up and shut her down. Luckily nobody was behind it. I was so scared I never got my hands out of my pockets and I just turned and walked to my truck. Afraid to bid on a possessed machine, I watched it go for $7,750 the next day. Looked like a nice machine. I did not know about the recall or I may have bid on it.

Anyway, be careful for you and others.

That doesnt sound like the the reason the modification was initiated...It sounds like someone bypassed the neutral start switch and you were at the mercy of a "real mechanic"...the type that has done it all....twice..and anything relating to safe machine operation is a waste of his time...just another reason why you dont start a machine while standing next to it..especially one that is unfamiliar...

The update was a new shift valve "spool" and the addition of a "neutral" position in the gear shift lever. If you have the serial number, call a local dealer and they will determine if it has been installed yet or not. As it is a safety issue they are obliged to do it if it hasnt been done yet. At least thats the procedure they are "supposed" to follow....

...Even after the update has been installed they will still somethimes move with the reverser in neutral unless the TRANSMISSION is also in neutral... After my 450C was updated I fooled around with the reverser lever to see if it could still jiggle itself into gear - it didn't take much lever movement to slip into the "go" position. As far as putting the gear transmission into neutral, it was a real pain to even FIND neutral, and then another real pain to get it out of neutral unless your main clutch was adjusted absolutely perfectly, so it didn't get used as intended at all, at least in my case. I guess the update was better than nothing, but I would never trust ANY hydralic reverser, JD or not, to stay in neutral, so if you're going to leave it running when you get off, at least use the neutral lever lock and set the parking brake... I wouldn't park my new pickup in front of it either.
Be careful out there!

Sounds like the update wasn't done exactly as dictated by Deere Co. The linkage is supposed to be measured for wear, and if needed replaced, and also a completely new shift valve-spool installed (with a wider neutral gate) if needed. Once completed, the installer is supposed to do - just what you did - and not return the machine until it's right. In regard to the neutral in the four speed range transmssion - in your machine, there is no REAL neutral, just a make-believe one that is installed with some grinding. It doesn't work very well. Later machines were produced with a true neutral detent.
