We recently purchased this old machine. It works well except for ongoing brake problems. It appears to use an air over hydraulic system. Can anyone offer troubleshooting, repair advice and/or an explanation of how the brakes work?

Hi, DennisJ. If you have one of the really early ones, either rigid frame or early articulated, you would have air over hyd. brakes. They are not much if any different from the same sorts of systems that were fitted to trucks way back when. You plonk your great splaw foot on the anchor pedal, it sends a blast of air down a pipe or two to an air-actuated hydraulic brake master cylinder, which causes the master cylinder to send a squirt of brake fluid to the wheel cylinders which then ----- hopefully -----
apply the brakes ----- if they are working.

Draining the air tanks DAILY was not optional, it was necessary. Any air leaks could see you left with an anchor tied to an elastic rope.

Correct adjustment also helped. I'm now running on 30-year-old memories here but I think they had TWO eccentric anchor bolts at the top of each brake backing plate. If I'm right, these had to be set with feeler guages beofre setting the adjustment on the bottoms of the shoes.

You might try posting a question to Bob-Ont on this forum. He may know more than I do. Or consult your friendly local Cat dealer. They weren't bad brakes when they were working.

Hope this helps.

You have a wonderful day.
Best wishes. Deas Plant.
