I need to replace the lower boom pin & bushings (the one nearest the dozer) on my John Deere 9550 backhoe attacment. The parts manual shows two bushings in the boom. It shows two outer tapered sleeves which must be in the frame and a pin with tapered ends going through the bushings. There are two 3/4-10 x 1-3/4 bolts and large washers, one on each side, which screw into the pin or the bushing I can not tell. To disassemble the joint I removed both bolts. I can not figuare out what to do next. I have never seen this joint apart. I do not understand what part the tapered pieces play in this joint. How do I go about getting these parts out ???? Is it best to raise the boom up and lock it in place or lay it out flat ???
Thanks for your time. Mark

First of all, stretch the boom out flat and relieve hydraulic pressure on all the backhoe cylinders. Assuming that the backhoe is still mounted the tractor, put blocking, or a floor jack, under the boom to support it when the pin comes out.
Then, according to the tech manual:
"remove the cap screws from the tapered pins. Place a short piece of pipe around the tapered bushing. Lay a piece of steel plate with a hole in the center over the pipe. Insert a long cap screw through the hole in the steel plate. Screw cap screw into tapered pin until the pin and bushing are pulled from the bore"
(The piece of pipe only has to be an inch or two long, but must be large enough for the bushing to be pulled through it.) If this doesn't work, they give a second procedure in the manual as follows:
"Whenever it is not possible to remove tapered pins and bushings by the method given at left, use the second procedure as follows: Place a pipe spacer or washer between the cap screw and tapered pin. This will transfer the force applied at the cap screw to the tapered pin and NOT the bushing. Tighten cap screw to standard torque. Strike head of cap screw to drive tapered pin and bushing from the bore. Note, if neither of the two procedures will remove tapered pin and bushings, use both procedures simultaneously."
This is not nearly as complicated as it sounds... I've done it several times and it is actually pretty easy... use the puller procedure on one side and the "strike the bolt" procedure on the other side at the same time for best results.
If you're going to be doing a lot of this kind of repair work I highly recomend you get a tech/service manual as it will answer a lot of questions you will have... If you need furthur help, let me know and I can scan the manual page for you and send it to your email.
Good luck.

Thanks srs/MN for the excellent description. I believe that I understand it. However, when I removed the outer bolts and washers there is about 1/4" gap from what I believe is the bushing face and the the outer casting which the bolts and washers butt up to. I don't understand that gap. How does the tightening of the outer bolt hold everthing together during operation?? I must be missing something. I will make up the tooling you described for both pushing and pulling and give it a try this week. Unfortunately the service manual for the hoe is the only one I am lacking. Thanks for your help!!

OK, I see whats going on now. I scraped a little paint away and I see the outer bushings. The washer seats on the bushing and the bolt pulls the bushing and pin together.
