Cat 955H Steering Clutch problem:

I have a Cat 955H track loader, S/N 60A10479. It has been running great but I had water in the oil in the bevel housing where the steering clutches are located. I drained the oil and replaced it with new 30 wt from Cat. I had to move it a few feet while the oil was out but didn’t think that would hurt anything since it was only running a few minutes. After I put the new oil in, the steering clutches no longer worked. I checked the oil in the transmission and found it low so added oil to it but no luck, still no steering clutches.

The linkage was pretty loose so I adjusted them before I put the oil back in. I thought that might have caused a problem so I loosened the brake adjusters so I only have about a ½ inch of brake to give more petal travel and the clutch linkage seems to be moving the lever more then when I started. Since this didn’t help I thought the pump might need to be primed. I took the line off of the screen and poured oil down the pipe, going toward the pump. When I started the engine the oil just lay there, the pump didn’t suck it in so I assumed the pump wasn’t working.

I called a local Cat dealer and talked to a mechanic who wasn’t familiar with the 955 but said he thought it was similar to the D4 and that if it went into gear ok, the pump was not at fault and to check the pressure coming out of the pump going to the filter. I took the line off the pump and started the engine and seemed to have pressure coming out of the pump but nothing getting to the filter. It didn’t seem to be much pressure but I did get some oil squirting out. I also got quite a lot of air. I then took the top off the filter and got no oil there with the engine running. I am at a loss and would appreciate any help I can get.
Thanks,
Gary

Thanks for the reply, is housing 4k1672 the one that has the pipe at the bottom that goes down into the oil supply? I did clean this screen and it looked ok but I will check it again. I will see if I can run somthing down into the oil to make sure it is open.
