Trying to figure out if I should buy this dozer or not.
The price is not the only thing I want to look at.
($400.00 to $600.00)
it is missing the front idler assy, the track is off, and I need a starter for the 3-71. The crawler looks very good, compared to what my 440 looked like when I brought it home.

I own a 440 icd (2-53 Detroit). I had to work on it for about 3 months to get it working, so Iam not afraid of some bloody knuckles.....and a few phone calls

Iam just wonder how hard it is to do steering clutches and maintenance.
Iam wondering what I would have if It was a 100 percent working dozer. I think its ton tons or so.

Is this a desirable machine?????
I have called a shop to check on parts, they discouraged me from buying it. Said it was a major pain to work on and parts were hard to come buy...

The only parts I could see replacing is the steering clutch and brakes. All the other stuff I could get and bearing houses.

What do you think???
I need some advise..

Parts are pretty easy to get, used, new, and new-old-stock. HD7 is very easy to work on when compared to other crawlers. Steering clutches and brakes come out the top, there's a driveshaft between the engine and trans. which makes engine clutch work easy. Detroit Diesel is very easy to get parts for. Only downside as far as performance goes is the hand clutch and lack of a hydraulic reverser. If you want to compare it to a Deere, it will do the work of a Deere 450 and then some, but it's not as convenient to operate. Much, much easier to repair though.

Scott,
Clutches and brakes can be removed without splitting the track, if I'm not mistaken. Underdcarriage parts (new or used) should be fairly readily available. The starter shouldn't be a problem, either. As with any other machine with tracks, it's gonna cost MUCHO $$$$$$$$.

I would want to see the engine turn over (at least a little) before I touched anything else. But, if you can get it for $400 - $600, the tracks alone (if they are pretty decent shape) will bring more than that parted out. If I could get it for that kind of money, I would take a chance on a divorce! LOL

Sounds like a decent deal to me.
