I went and aligned the timing marks on my JD 310A. Are these marks just the initial starting point? I had to advance it to get it to run smoother. Thanks.

Yes, the marks are only a starting point, and they only affect "starting", not "running." Often, though, when the advance stops working properly, and the engine runs lousy, attempts to repair include physically rotating the pump, thus advancing initial (static) timing. This can make the engine run better at higher RPM, but makes starting worse. Just like a gas engine, the fuel timing advance is what affects the performance of the engine when running, not the initial setting. You've probably got the JDB331AL2406 pump, or something close? Advance timing is: 1 degree at 325-525 RPM, 5 degrees at 750-850 RPM, and 8 degrees by 1175 RPM. You can use a plastic timing window to check and adjust with the engine running (Roosamaster part # 13366 or Deere JD-259) or use a regular gas-engine timing light with a pulse-pickup adapter. Keep in mind that the injection pump runs half engine speed, and timing marks represent half of actual engine timing. So, at full advance, actual engine speed is 2350 RPM and 8 degrees advance, but actual pump speed is 1175 RPM and degrees at the pump are 4, not 8.
