Looking at a mid seventies MF 40 backhoe with loader with 3 cylinder perkins diesel in average to good condition. Please, what's it worth?

I came across a similar sounding machine at a yard sale recently. It was a Massey Ferguson 204 with a loader/hoe, three cyinder Perkins diesel. Had some sort of forward/reverse operated by foot pedal. The operator's seat on the hoe moved with the hoe when swinging left or right. I think the machine was called a "Work Bull." It had brand new tires front and rear and the engine had a knock in it. The guy who was having the sale sold it for $1800 just as I pulled up. The "new owner" who hadn't paid for it yet, offered it to me for $4000 and I passed on it. There's been another one for sale for months at monkeyads.com - the machine in PA. It's the same machine but has a Continental gas engine instead of the Perkins. The owner told me he had nothing but trouble with it. He said every time he tried to use it, something else broke. He wanted $3000 for it, said he already had $6000 into it. In my opinion, any backhoe that can be used has to be worth at least $4000 - I say that because I just about never find them any cheaper - with one exception. Some Amish farmers moved into my area and bought a farm that came with a few rubber tired tractors and a huge Pettibone Multihoe backhoe/loader with a Detroit Diesel engine. Their rules don't allow rubber tires. I gave the guy $2500 and have been using it ever since.
