hi,
im from Ireland and i am currently restoring a fordson major crawler out of 2 crawlers. both have running engines but my main problem with both of them is that they are not slewing(i.e. tracks are not turning wen yu pull levers.....both crawlers were out in the open for last 20 - 30 yrs, so i think my problem lies inside the aluminum hubs were the steering rods/pins are feeding to...i dont want to take these off until i know wats behind them and find out from a few people as to wat my likely problem is...i read somewhere that there is a clutch disc inside...is there 1 or 2 of these clutch discs inside...would i be right in saying this is my problem...has anyone got any info on a similar problem they cured....the previous owners said they were working fine wen parked up...i would really appreciate if anyone could help me..or if anyone has a assembly breakdown of the contents inside the hub i.e. a diagram showing all assembly parts etc.. thanking you in advance

An Australian bookshop has reprint manuals for some County crawlers:
www.ploughbooksales.com.au

They also sell a book called "Crawler Tractor scrapbook PART 1" which has 14 pages on the various Fordson crawlers, inc an identification chart & steering info.

I"m in the plant repair business in London and have not seen a County since the mid sixties, they are the same as the Fordson Major tractor apart from the back axle and setup for the tracks,if yours is the same shape as the ones in the picture then they are this side of 1951,the Major before that was the E27N and had a Perkins P6 in them the front was different as well,I have no manuals or any other info on them, hope you can break the clutches free.
Good Luck
AJ

Barry,
There is a firm in Ludlow in Shropshire that hold all the County Tractor spares . They took it over when County Commercial Cars Ltd. stopped production . They bought the entire stock of spares off the reciever in 1983.
The people to contact are Adrian and Andrew Tavernor at New House Farm, Knowbury, Ludlow , Shropshire. SY8 3JU Daytime phone 01584-890276 or evenings 01584-879038
I have a County Ploughman and sent the manufacturers number on the plate in front of your feet when in the seat, to Thomas Andrews who researches the week and year that your tractor came off the production line, and the correct name of that pattern and skid unit used he is very interesting to talk to and makes no charge His Tel is 01726-883195 phone between 10am and 8pm only Mon to Sat.
Hope you find these numbers usefull
Best of luck Fred

Barry the County has two steering clutches, one for each side, they are multi plate in a drum with outer brake band, your problem now is the same as every other crawler that been left idle for any length of time the clutch plates are rusted/stuck together and will not disengage when you pull the levers, you may be able to break them free if you tighten up the adjustment and then tie the levers back, tie the tractor to something it would not be able to move and try jerking it,jerking is better than a straight pull, the clutches may break free,(do not try to hold it on the brakes),they may break free after the first try and not after a thousand,it is a big saving of time and labour if you can free them without tearing them down, there were a lot of them tractors in Ireland used by the people that take peat for the power stations, seen them while been on holidays there in Nt Mayo some years ago, go to the link below to see a spec sheet for the County.
