I"m working on a 580k 4x4, unsure of the year it was manufactured. There is an alternator field circuit wire that is loose in the side console. This wire appears to be separate from the wiring harness. I"m not sure where to connect it. I"ve found a 75A relay that is bad which I"ll have to replace. Any help about the alternator field circuit wire connection would be appreciated.

The alternator should carry three wires, the main heavy hot wire to the + terminal, the warning light to the F terminal and the tachometer to the other,it is very hard to remember what wires are under the console but I do remember that they use a multi plug where the loom goes into the back of the tacho panel plus a smaller one with a couple of wires on it,the F terminal on the alternator is wired so it is the ground for the battery warning light on the console, when the key is turned on power is sent to one side of the battery warning light, the ground for that light is through the F terminal on the alternator,it also exictes the alternator to charge, when the engine is started and the alternator starts to produce power the ground is broken and the light will go out, have you no charge,is the tacho working, does the battery light come on,if the bulb is blown it may not charge, the K is about 89/90.
