JD 350 Reverser

My JD 350 dozer reverser is stuck in reverse. The clutch also doesn't work and if you try to put the reverser into the forward position there is a grinding sound and the engine trys to stall (I believe from servere backpressure on the hydraulic pump). The only way to stop or go is to force the transmission into and out of gear at slow speed (no clutch).

Any ideas? I was told that the parts alone to bebuild the reverser could be $3000. Just looking for ideas before I scrap this beauty. It's been a great dozer otherwise.

Hey Guys, the best i can remember about a 350 reverser is that it is a double clutch drum (back to back, one side fwd. other rev.)with clutch discs and metal plates, and as i remember a 350 has no clutch, all the clutch pedal does is drops psi. to the reverser to make it stop pulling and sounds to me like that you have a stacked up reverse pack (discs broke or etc. and has this locked up and turning all the time like it had clutch pressure to it all the time) this would explain the noise and engine stalling when you try to go to fwd. it is trying to turn it the other way and cannot i.e. engaging fwd. and rev. at same time and i really cannot see it costing that much to rebuild unless you want to use genuine JD parts as aftermarket parts are readily available.

Check the clutch pedalm adjustment using a pressure gauge. If overhaul is required, the reverser is easy to remove and rebuild, be sure to replace the housing that contains the hook rings. also used hydraulic-transmission hydraulic oil, don't cheat by using a cheap oil.

The 3000 is not really out of line for the parts to rebuild the reverser. The last one I did for a customer the total bill was around 6500. These machines tend to rattle the reverser apart destroying all the splined connections. To get a general idea of the input splines and isolator listen to the sounds when shutting the machine down a loud clunking rattle is ussally a indication of severe wear. Just the input spider as JD calls it (input shaft)is around 600> Labor will be around 30 hrs to rebuild. I hope this will give you some basis to make you decision. Chuck

...just take it apart and check it out. They are pretty simple inside.Get a parts book and a tech manual. Its hard to believe that the parts total will be 3000. Need a little good judgement on parts that can be reused...A dealer will always cover thier asses and replace everything to avoid a rework. Also alot of thier "technicians" are merely parts changers.

thats pretty close$ to replacing a reverser.

Thats why I've avoided the early JD series,
as they were notorious for losing reversers.

If after rebuilding , you can check reverser operation on the floor.. I made up an adapter that goes on my HD Milwaukee 1/2" drill you use an old clutch center [with internal spline] that fits reverser input shaft, weld a piece of pipe that goes over the reverser shaft witha 1/2" round drive welded to it.
Fill reverser with 9 quarts of hy-gard,use a jumper hose on cooler lines, install a 200 lb. gauge on presure tap on top of reverser control valve, pull clutch pedal back. Now brace yourself and turn the input shaft with drill . It will seem to turn too slowly but it works.. Shift forward to reverse while turning with drill. If it shows near correct presure in both directions, you have a winner. I've used this method about 20 times, It works..
