I have a straight 450 JD diesel track loader.

i have pumped out the adjuster on one of the tracks and I over tightened it.

how do i back the pressure off. I see there is a large square headed bolt next to the grease fitting, and I opened it and some grease came out of it but it did not relieve the pressure on the track I also banged on the idler with a sledge hammer to try to move it back, but it did not move

any help is appreciated

thanks
Dave

The 4X4 method sounds ok, but you should be able to push it back by backing the machine up with the grease plug removed. The torque applied to moving the machine will pull the idler back. Stay clear of where the grease will fly.

I put a 4x4 behind the bucket, curled it back, and out came the grease

Thanks
Dave

I am not too familiar with the JD setup, but on a Case I seem to recall someone mentioning to use the loader to force the tracks loose. Prop a 4x4 between the bucket and the tracks and roll the bucket back.

Hi,I would try and press in on the ball of the grease fitting with a small nail or something and see if it relieves pressure just in case the square headed bolt might have gotten something in it and is stopped up. How far out is the rod? it might have came out too far and got jammed and wont go back in.I have sometimes taken the bolt and grease fitting all the way out and put a winch across the tracks and pulled tight on them while tapping on the adjuster, watch out for flying grease when it does come loose cause it will make a mess. Just a few ideas

With that square headed bolt backed out a couple of turns [ 2 at most ] , tap on the track adjuster barrel with a respectable hammer, you will notice it should release some tension. Don't beat it to death just get it's attention. The shock of hammer blows usually makes for movement of adjuster barrel on piston.
