What is considered normal wear and at what point do you have to do a major overhaul? I see many dozers with various percentage ratings (50%, 60%, 70%, etc.) I'm looking at dozers in the 16-20,000 poiund range (JD 550, D-4 cat, D-37 KOm., etc.).How do you mesure and what are you actually measuring? I know if the sprocket teeth start looking pointed then its time to change. What about track pins? ANy help would be apprecieated. i would rather pay extra for tracks in real good shape then have to buy a ragged out one or questionable one and have to dump a bunch of money into it right away.

Tractorusa: A couple of points to add--in most cases, the undercarriage numbers you see advertised should be taken with a grain of salt--there are well-established methods for rating undercarriage wear, but many sellers pick a number out of the air and use it, rather than measuring the components. Needless to say, this number usually tends to be "optimistic", often to the point of bearing no resemblance to reality! As undercarriage replacement on a machine of this size can easily run you $10,000 and up, you"re wise to take an expert along with you when you inspect a used machine. Handing a knowlegable person $100 to assist you with measuring and evaluating the undercarriage is a whole lot more cost-effective than handing the friendly parts dealer $5,000 or more when you find out you need major undercarriage work.
