I have a 1981 JD 500C B/L. Over the winter I had to fast charge it a few times for snow removal. Then I read that I could damage my alternator (it says "generator") during charging. Well, sure enough it"s dead now... So first, where would you recommend getting another alternator as I would amagine it"s a common item. And second, If I disconnect the small red wire that goes to the positive terminal from the alternator will that allow me to fast charge this machine in the winter without damaging anything next time?? Thank you!!

If you had the charger hooked up with the correct polarity to the battery (and the "ground" setup of the tractor), it is NOT likely you damaged the alternator by fast-charging the battery.

The alternator may simply have died of old age, causing the need to charge the battery in the first place.
