The hydraulics quit working on my 555. Happened rather fast without any indication of something breaking.
a. Will raise the bucket about foot when just starting out. Will also raise the bucket about another foot after sitting for a few minutes but with very little force.
b. Supposedly has new pump and relief valve in 2003 by previous owner. Work done by Hillsboro Equipment, Inc. in Hillsboro, Wi. Not sure how much wear it has had since then but apparantly not too much.
3. Relief valve removed and visually inspected. No sign of problem.
4. With hydraulic line to backhoe disconnected, the front hydraulics will raise the bucket and do load the hydraulics/motor down noticeably (short test only).
5. Do not have a setup to test the actual pressure and not sure if this would tell enough;ie, pump bad ($900) or relief valve bad ($200). With these costs, not real practical to troubleshoot by replacement. If either bad, must be something else wrong since fairly new items (considering that replacement claim was invalid or previous owner swapped pump before selling!).
6. Preparing to remove the hydraulic pump for visual inspection. Try to verify if new.
7. Any one had similar problems, suggestions on testing, other thoughts? Reply here on forum or email direct to: rocktoss@hotmail.com
Thanks

Joe

My JD555 w/4-1 bucket and 9300 backhoe does not have very much power. Engine is great and strong. All lubicants and filters were change and steel mesh filter cleaned. Right clutch pedal must be floored to turn slowly right. backhoe bucket struggles to bring load in to lift and dump, but will not lift when extended and loaded with muck. does anyone think it's a problem with the clutches and main pump, or possibly the main relief valve. If I leave the hoe and loader off the ground overnight, they don't drop very much.
I have lots of experience restoring cars and building boats, but this is my first venture in heavy machinery. Pleas give me any advice you can from any point of view. www.biophilia.net

Loop the backhoe hoses together and see if the loader behaves as it should. I seem to remember that there is a priority valve/relief valve on the hoe that can stick and cause the problem you are experiencing by dumping the oil back to the sump.

Re: Looping the backhoe hoses.

Thanks for the response. Have already tried that - should have mentioned it originally.

There was no change with that configuration. Bit puzzling anyway. The JD mechanic said there was a relief valve on the backhoe too but I couldn't find it. Didn't make any difference anyway.

As mentioned earlier, when leaving the backhoe hoses disconnected, it did give more pressure to the front bucket/boom controls;ie, the bucket went right up. But was loading down the engine/pump too much for continued use.
