Hello - Would like to clear 7-acres on our farm and was considering buying a Cat 941 crawler loader. Would a 941 do the trick? We have a mixture of oak, poplar, birch and pine. Anyone recommend something other than the 941? Thank you! Kindly - RH

RH Miller, The 941 is a good little loader, myself I would want a little larger something on the line of a 955, but then, I am more of a “Brute Force” type of guy so I would be looking for something a little larger. You will have to take in to account how much money you have to spent on your project as well as the time you have and how large the trees are, then what you are going to do with the machine after you finish your clearing project.

If time is no problem and you have a lot of it then going with the small unit maybe ok. If you have some larger timber you can always chain saw them and dig out the stumpage later.

But back to your question, yes it will likely do the job…just slower and be sure you have some sort of safety canopy as seann as stated even if you get a larger machine.

A 941 would work fantastic, as long as you aren't dealing with trees 4 foot thick. Plus as long as the machine is in decent shape, Caterpillar's generally accepted to be the best. I have an old International machine of very similar size and power to the 941, and it clears trees fantastically. Just make sure you have a canopy (ROPS) and if you can get a 4-1 bucket get that too. If you're real lucky, get one with a 4-1 and a winch...now that's a great logging machine.

Hi, R. H. Miller. Both Seann and KSB have got it right althoough I would have said, if you can get one with a rear ripper, THAT would be the way to go. You then have a machine that will do pond-making and many other things as well as clearing and logging.

Bout the overhead protection --- NAH, you don"t need it -- UNLESS you value your head, your life and your status as a human being, maybe even as a breadwinner for your family if you have a family. Only if you want to end up as a statistic should you go clearing without GOOD overhead protection.

Hope this helps.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
