500 international dozer

hi,we recently rebuilt the gas engine in our little 500,had the head reworked completely,new rings,rod bearings ect,,,.my question is,what would cause the engine to still smoke now?what could we have did wrong?would incorrect valve adjustments cause this problem?should we have had engine bored oversize ,any help would be appreciated,danny

I agree with seann, if you didn"t rebore it could be awhile or never until the rings seat, same with valve guides.
My 500 gas smokes ALOT, I just put in hotter plugs to take care of fouling and don"t idle for too long.
Hour meter stopped working at 9987 hours many years ago.

If you didn't bore the block, did you mic the bores and check for excessive wear and ovaling? And if you didn't replace the pistons did you mic them and ensure they were not excessively worn either? Also, if bores had "ring ridges" at the top, at a minimum they should have been removed and the rest honed. Were the valve seals replaced and were the valve guide clearances checked to ensure the stems weren't wobbling in the guides too much?

Also make sure the crankcase breather is unplugged so that exccessive crankcase pressures don't cause blowby. It's also possible as the rings seat at least some of the smoking will subside. Are you sure it is oil smoke and it's not being caused by coolant and/or excessive fuel richness/poor ignition?
