I have a 5421 forklift that is and outdoor large tired tractor type conversion from the factory.
The seal on the the drive axle is leaking and the local shop says that the cover plate over the drives has to come off to get at the end of the axle so it can be pulled and the seal and possibly the bearing replaced. Can I get at the seal from the outer end as taking the machine apart is a big job, all the hydralic controls, steering footplates and pedals would have to come off? What I see is a large nut at the center of the outer hub which looks like it would hold the wheel hub to the end of the axle and then there is a bolted cover at the end of the axle housing. Since I don't want this machine out of service for long ( it is in daily service ) has anyone else had one off these apart and know how it is done? Just would like to know before I get started and don't want to pay someone else to get an education on taking apart forklifts.

My buddy and I have rebuilt the front axle of a Massey Ferguson 470 wheel loader using 3/4 ton pickup truck U-Joints to replace the ball bearing system that was factory. That axle was taken apart from the outside of the wheel. Seeing as yours was a tractor conversion you should be able to do the same. Take those bolts off and see whats inside.
