Someone told me that the older style John Deere crawlers are notorious for bad steering clutches in that they always fail. Feller told me that you always have to rip apart the rear ends and re-adjust them or something and they will be ready to go again. Has that been anyone's experience here? Also are there any quirks like that for the Case crawlers? I have a '67 Case Crawler Loader so just wondering if there are things I should be really keeping an eye out for.

Early crawlers were alright. Oil clutches are better. Always , always cover the back half of the machine, from dashboard to over the back of fuel tank to keep water from setting on and leaking into clutch housings. Adjustments are made by removing 2 covers to gain access to brake band and clutch adjustment. Occasional use helps to warm up clutches and keep " stuff " loose and functioning properly..

Problem with JD steering clutches is usually rust. Caused by lack of use. They were dry steering clutches. When housings would get moisture in them from outside, or sweat on the inside, things get rusty, or gummed up. Then teardown was necessary.
When machines are cared for, and used regularly, they work OK. Operating the machine creates some heat in the housings, and keeps things dried out.

I have a family heirloom clock, Inside it on the label it reads "WARRANTED IF WELL USED!"

That's what I tell the crawler customers.

I have a 440 JD with dry clutches, it gets used regularly, never sits more than a month. Clutches need adjusting fairly often , but it isnt a big deal once you understand how it works.
If you are not going to run a business with it they are fine. And even though you have to split tracks and remove final drive housing to replace them, it really isnt that bad a project , since it is a small machine, I've done several of them and the more you do it the less of a project it seems.
