I have a JD550 dozer, changed transmission filter after noticing transmission pressure was on the low side of the "green" on the guage. The fluid is in need of changing, I checked the book and figured that the pump may be going bad on me. While looking at the book, I noticed that there is a sump strainer that could be cleaned, but couldn't tell if I had to pull the pump in order to remove the strainer. If so, I would probably go for having the pump looked at while it is out. The pump has the wording "twin disc" on the casting, but the book makes no mention of such a thing, it simply says it is a "gear pump".... any thoughts or comments invited!

I"m going through the same thing. My shop manual does not tell me how to take the sump screen out, i have the cover off but the sump seems to attach on the side to another pipe-anybody know how it comes off?

I am pulling the transmition pump too and want to know how to check the relief valve preasure. Once agin the shop manual says check it but doesn"t tell me how. Do you know how to check it?

If I remember correctly, the transmission pump is under the front of the Transmission. The aluminum hydraulic pump is external, held on with 2 capscrews. The transmission pump is beside it, the cover plate is about1/2 inch thick. There are 2 "rings" of bolts, and threaded holes. remove the outer bolts, they hold the pump to the case. Drain the oil from the transmission. Then thread bolts into the threaded holes, and pull out the pump. The inner set of bolts holds the pump sections together. there will probably be more oil come out with the pump, have a catch pan nearby. You will see the drive gear, and the transmission pump relief valve. Check the relief valve setting, and/or replace it. the unit goes back in with a coating of loctite plastic gasket.

I'm not familiar with the 550 that you have, but I think "Twin Disc" is the manufacturer of the transmission, and is simply a name. If you have the manual, does it show how to adjust the pressure? It could be a weak relief valve in the system causing the low pressure. BTW, does ICF mean insulated concrete form? I would really love to use that method to build the basement for my new house, but it's relatively unknown in my area (S/W MS)

Thanks guys, I have the manual and yes, it does detail removing and rebuilding the pump, I was just hoping I wouldn't need to go that route, Seems simple enough though.

Yes, I'm an ICF home builder, been doing it for years, have designed the form systems and have built many a structure including basements. If you research ICF's and put pencil to paper, you will find that construction costs are a bit higher, but the operation cost of the entire house is typically 50 to 80% less, you may want to consider building the entire house ICF not just the basement. Payback on HVAC savings is usually less than 5 years.
