AFTER WORKING WITH MY 350 FOR ABOUT TWO HOURS I NOTICED STEAMING AT THE RADIATOR. CHECKED COOLANT AND IT WAS ABOUT A GALLON LOW. TEMP GAGE WAS ON NORMAL. FILLED IT UP AND WORKED FOR TWO MORE HOURS, NOTICED A SMALL AMOUNT OF STEAM, CHECKED WHILE RUNNING AND FOUND COOLANT COMING OUT OF THE OVERFLOW TUBE FOR ABOUT ONE MINUTE THEN STOPPED. AFTER ABOUT FIVE MINUTES IT STARTED TO OVERFLOW AGAIN FOR ONE MINUTE TEMP GAGE STILL ON NORMAL. CHECKED WATER TEMP AT RADIATOR AND IT WAS 170. COULD IT BE THE PREASURE CAP??

It appears i have solved the problem!!
The neck depth on the radiator is 1" and .060
A standard auto 1" depth cap will not seal the lower sealing surface. This lets coolant escape at a very low preasure. John Deere dealer ordered me a new cap and it measured 1".075
Two days of running and coolant stays where it belongs. napa auto cap$6.00 John Deere cap $13.00

I thought they all did that. Leave room for it. On both my old machines I check the coolant level by sticking my finger in the radiator. The tip of index finger should just touch the coolant.
When coolant gets hot it expands. It is noncompressable. There has to be an air space or an overflow bottle or something to let it expand or it's going to come out. If you put a cap on strong enough to hold it in it's going to pop a hose. Isn't that right?

I've had the same problem for two years no themostat and a brand new 18 pound cap, still leaks. Now I'm at the point that I just check it and top off every time I start it.

My 350 does the same kind of thing. I have experience with a number of 440 skidders that also did it. Changed thermostats, rad caps and temp gauges. Then got smart(maybe). I took a pop bottle, drilled the cap the size of the overfill hose and set it up like an expansion tank. All of the machines I mentioned are now the same. You can pour the overflow back into the rad as many times as you like and after a short while at operating temp it is back in the bottle. Two of the 440's were recent good rebuilds, and they still did it so I don't think compression is the culprit. A few years ago I just quit thinking about it and let the bottle do it's thing.

maybe its your pressure cap or the temperature tip on the end of your wire is gunked up. either way it shouldn't cost that much to replace.
