I have a 580 forklift with 5000 hours;it needs a p/s pump every 1200 hours. Does anyone know of a source for an aftermarket pump? I understand they are a better design. Could I bleed pressure from the main hyd. circuit? This machine does a lot of tight turning and the rest of the front end needs occasional work. I love the machine and would hate to replace it.

In short you can't tap into the main hydraulics directly, you would need a flow control valve and a pressure control valve and change all the plumbing as well, you may as well buy the aftermarket pump.the pressure for the main hydraulics is a way higher as is the flow rate needed for the power steering.

I don't know about aftermarket pumps, but we had the same problem with a 580 forklift at one shop I worked at. I suppose tapping into the main hydraulic system could be done, but it would require some major re-engineering. I know some later forklifts (580E, I think) used a double pump, with the big section running the hydraulics and the little section running the power steering. I don't remember if the setup is similar enough that you could cobble up something like that, but it might be worth a look. The pump is a little longer than the single pump- if they mount similarly and there's room, it probably wouldn't be too hard to do.
