I have Cae 580 Super D hoe, it hs always started and run fine till a week ago. It was a very hot day and it after using it for an hour or so it started to die out and eventually stall like it wasnt getting fuel. It would restart fine but only run for a few minutes and then die again. I changed both fuel filters, pulled all the supply lines off and checked for dirt as well as the valve at the bottom of the tank. There is lots of fuel flow when I open the drains on the fuel filters or disconnect the line at the injector pump inlet all the time even right after it dies out. I jumpered a 12 volt wire directly from the battery to the solenoid on the pump in case it was an electrical problem but no better. I left it till the next day and it started and ran fine for about 30 minutes then same problem. Tried again the next day, same thing, ran fine for about 45 minutes and then started to die out. Restarts fine but dies again in less than a minute. Don't know what to check next other than have the injector pump serviced or replaced

Any ideas would be appreciated before I go that route. Gary

I use to work for a case dealership and this was a very common problem with these tractors and it is the injection pump you will have to take it off and have it rebuilt

ok then when i worked for a massey dealer we had some big 2805 masseys that were built during strike and they were sabotaged buy employes they put rubber bands in the fuel tanks well rubber bands and diesel fuel DON't mix they swell up in the lines when they get hot pull all your lines of and blow air through also check all elbos check for screen in tank

Re possible soft fuel line - all ny fuel lines are steel, one from the tank valve to the primary filter inlet and one from the secondary filter outler to the pump inlet. I loosened the nut on the pump inlet line and let the fuel run out and restarted - same thing ran for a bit and died but there was always fuel running out of the fitting right at the pump inlet - didnt appear to be starved for fuel or it would have sucked air in instead of fuel running out.

Still baffled

Pump may be weak. There is a fitting on top of the pump on the fuel return (scavange) line There is a translucent flapper valve inside. Drill (about 1/8 inch)it out, clean and replace the fitting. Engine can operate without it. This will buy you some time until you must eventually replace the pump. This worked for about 500+ hours on a 580C.

Diamond J ,

If you remove the ball from the housing
pressure regulator and don't fix the cause of it stopping up , you will in a short time cut the rivots off that the governor drive ring mounts on.
When those rivots are gone , there is nothing to
drive the weight retainer and weights . With no
governor weight rotation you no longer have any
speed control , RPM is free to go unlimited up
and up untill something comes apart mechanically,
as in rods out the side . I have seen what happens !!

Hi George

I received your post after I got the previous one to drill out the fitting. on the return line. I already did it and the engine runs fine. Used it for a couple of hours with no problem. I guess this at least narrows it down to an internal injection pump problem. I don't know a lot about the pump internals and m wondering what the problem could be that was corrected for now by drilling out the fitting ??

Gary, I don't have a problem with removing the ball from the pressure regulator to finish a job
or get it home . The problem is with continuing to
run it with the governor ring destroyed . Depending upon where you buy it , the kit for the pump is about 40.00 plus a new regulator about 6.00.

Thanks for the help so far George. When you refer to a kit, what parts are you refering to and what degree of disassembly is required. I have never worked on an injection pump before. I would appreciate any advice on what to replace if I can avoid an entire rebuilt pump for my machine that doesn't see a lot of use

thaks
Gary

Gary, Kit contains all the soft parts and a few hard parts, basically every thing needed to strip and reassemble . Governor drive ring is all the way in the bottom ,near total disassembly . I'll send you an email .

George MD, Could you send me the information on this rebuild kit too? My 580D is doing the same thing. The way I understand it (please correct me if I"m wrong)that the pump is both the injector pump and the transfer pump in one unit. Does this kit rebuild the whole thing? My injector pump leaks fuel out of the governor/throttle shaft as well as the performance problem. Does installing this kit require removing the pump from the engine? I was under the impression nothing that could be done to the pump besides getting it completely rebuilt (for anywhere from $400-900) Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks...
