Just purchased a 1988 case 450C dozer which has a 4T-390 engine with about 3500 hrs. Has a 6 way blade. Can anyone tell me about this engine? Oil analysis on year old oil says high copper, oil pressure is ok, and runs fine. Is it time to tear into the engine now? Will be used for farm work on my farm only. Undercarriage looks good. Any advice or comments are welcome.

The 4T-390 is actually a Cummins "B" series engine. 4 cylinder turbocharged 3.9 litre alot of different specs. on these engines but likely around 60 hp in the turbo version. They are a non sleeved engine so some would group them in the throw-away engine family, personally I dont, they like any other engine can be bored oversize or sleeved back to standard. 3500 hrs is not in excess of what a well cared for engine is good for, these engines are very popular in logging equipment and its not uncommon to see over 5000 hrs on these engines. I have torn engines apart based on a oil sample reading and have found nothing wrong with them, if it's possible get a second opinion on the oil sample.
