td7c dozer brake problem

I have a TD7C (441 Series) IHC dozer w/ PS that the left side brakes suddenly (working one minute, not the next) went out on.

This is a bit of a problem, because the only place that will service this machine is over 200mi away and we are only capable of hauling it locally. While I don't have a problem having it taken down there, the service company refuses to give us any kind of estimate and will not even look at it with out a credit application.

I have gathered so far that it may just need to be adjusted or something along those lines.

If anyone could provide me with any kind of details/encite on this I would greatly appreciate it (even pointing me to a good place to find a service manual for this thing would be great).

I have a 1980 TD7E dozer and a 1976 100E loader that are slightly newer but I believe they have the same steering. The steering levers operate a hydraulic valve under the seat, this valve has hoses that go into the transaxle and operate a pair of hydraulic cylinders. When you pull on one of the levers it moves one of the pistons to first disengage a disk brake type clutch and then as it keeps moving it engages a disk brake on the same side to stop the track. You could have lost a pressure line to the cylinder or the cylinder seal could have let go or the something could have come apart. If you go up a hill (I have lots of them) or pushing against something the track should stop even if the brake is not working, if it does not stop then the hydraulic cylinder is not moving at all or something is broken. I guess there even could be something wrong in the valve itself that prevents oil going to the cylinder. There is an adjustment above the rear track sprocket for adjusting the brake but I can"t recall exactly what the procedure is. I do have the service manual but not with me. My Email address is Workbull@earthlink.net if you have any questions but be patient it is outdoor time here in Western PA and I don"t check my email every day. Just remember that if the track does not stop even with a heavy load on it then the hydraulic cylinder is not doing its job for some reason. There is a large sheet metal cover on top of where all of this stuff lives in the transaxle but I have never ventured in there.
