I am a small dirt contractor and the work just isn't there, the phone doesn't hardly ring. I don't know if its me or if its some thing happening in the area I'm in, Northern Minesota. What is business like where you are located? Is it the same as previous years, business up or business down a little or down a lot?

Real busy here in north central Iowa. I work for a farm drainage and general excavating company. We have two tile crews that were done real early this year so they are doing some of my dirt jobs. I don't do much work for farmers any more, mostly industrial and commercial work and a little road construction. Have been doing a lot of bin pads and flat storage pads for grain elevators lately.

Here in western Colorado there is a energy boom going on, if you own heavy equipment you can work it. If you can fix it or operate it and can pass a drug test. You can work all you can stand and most wages are above twenty per hour.

here in norther illinois fairly slow not terribly slow but fairly. i DO NOT want to start a war by any means but i knoow for a FACT that some contributing factors is fuel prices. the reason i know is because i was flat out told. i have been told by multiple companies that they either dont want to spend alot fuel eating up thier budget, there trying to push back pm maintenance(alothough i still believe tahts the cheapest best insurance oil and filters but hard to convince a struggling company to spend any money they dont absolutly have to. also some other companies are not fixing stuff they normally would not making it right there just "if it runs good enough it" such as fixing ac etc. on the flip side alot of companies just dont have the cash to buy new trucks equipment which is leaving htem to keep the older stuff aka more break downs keep some business but on the same token no cash means they dont want to fix it spend alot of money. also here in northern illinois we are having a drought. i dont particularly work on lawnmowers however company i am with does work on them and they are at a dead stand still no ones out mowing grass weeds nothing. nothing being used nothing breaking nothing needs fixed. also even homeowners are spending double on fuel etc for their car lacking cash, and w/o the rain and mowing stihl and husky sales (string trimmers, chain saws we sell and dixon lawnmower sales are super super super super low this year from what i have heard. also compact tractor sales way down....lawnmower sales and service sooooo slow the glentleman thats been w/the company 20 years is sweeping floors and washing company trucks. that tells you something

Wide open as a goober sack here in Northeast Ga. for a self-employed, work by myself, too-cheap-per-hour equipment mechanic. We have had quite our share of rain lately, of course thats when everybody wants there machine fixed (when THEY cant use it). Dang I need a vacation.

Sorry to hear that things are slow. Hate to say this but the South is booming. I'm from central Pa. and guess what. Things are still slow there. Been here for 20 years and the last 10 have been super. Last year was alot slower than before but not now. Haven't answered my phone in 2 months. I do fence and small grading. Thank goodness for those good old oliver oc-4 and 46. Wish you the best of luck

Guess you"re right about the south. I don"t want a lot of work and get offered more than I want. Yesterday went to see a guy I"ve known for awhile. All I had to do was beat a $35,000 bid for a 1200 ft crushed stone construction driveway. Oh, and show up to work, which is a common problem.

Hi there, I work for a lumber supply company near Des Moines, Iowa, and it is definately slower this year. I"ve heard of one company that has over 50 houses sitting empty, built to many houses the last few years, not enough people to buy "em. Allot of others at work don"t think so, but I believe the price of fuel is starting to have an impact on how people are spending their money. A little differant business, but w/o you all digging the foundations, there wouldn"t be much of a call for my job. Rich

One of my Wife's relatives down in Springfield, MO decided to get in the business this year. Bought a dozer loader and dump truck. At last report he was "overwhelmed" with work. Putting in long hour days, and still can't keep up with it. I have no idea what he charges...but he got out of high steel erection, so I know he's used to good wages.

Hey Jim, I know what the problem is....There are way too many "Damm Yankees" moving down South and bringing all the business with them. Dad and I work on equipment and for us business is SUPER. With just the two of us we have more work than the two of can reasonably get done and people waiting on us to get to them as soon as we can. Not to mention I'm getting tooled up to start doing field A/C repair work on equipment along with everything else. I talked to the service manager at a local dealership this afternoon and he said they are currently 17 jobs behind for A/C work so no matter what else we had going when people found out I was doing it I could keep busy on that alone, especially if I could get to them quick....Like that's gonna happen with everything else going on....As far as the rest of the construction, equipment, and land clearing industry our work is typically in direct relation to how things are going for them. Basically the more work going on, the more they break down, the more calls we get. I talked to a customer yesterday evening that does drilling and blasting work and he said he's looked at more jobs in the past few weeks than he usually does in several months. Like someone said to me awhile back, all the good places have already been built on, now their having to take the bad ones and make them good enough to build on and that takes alot of work...I hope things pick up for you up there, we've been through the slumps here too and I know it sucks. Like I jokingly started this out though we are seeing alot of people coming down from the North and that's causing a huge boom in the industry making room for all of them to live and play. Unfortunately til some of them decide to head back up your way I don't know what to tell you. Good luck....
