Sticking bucket spool valve on John Deere 310B bac

The spool valve that controls the backhoe bucket on my JD310B seems to be sticking ... sometimes it won't go to the right, sometimes when it's there it will jam over that side ... the spring mechanism didn't seem to be retrieving it from the left either.

We took it apart, and could find no obvious fault with it. The control "shaft" on the inside of the valve didn't slide easily back in, so the service guy sanded it lightly with 180grit paper, which seemed to make it slide in and out a bit easier ... but it still jams up.

A new one (just that one valve) is $830 ... seems outrageous - I'm especially reluctant to pay that considering I can't even find what's faulty with the old one. Any ideas as to what might be wrong?

Thanks,

Martin.

It might be worth getting a machine shop to lightly hone the bore on a Sunnen Hone, If it is just a high spot, making it stick, that should take care of it.

First check the valve spool for straightness on a granite surface, to see if it's bent. A bent spool will never be right. If the spool is straight, try honing the cast valve body with a very fine sandpaper on a split end rod. I use a 3/8" steel rod with a hacksaw slit cut in about 2 inches, fold the sand paper into the slit and use a power drill to lightly hone the valve body.I've done it on truck hydraulic valves that have had pump failures and filled the system with metal particles..good luck..
