What are the pros and cons of the use of a trackloader vs a trackhoe. I have a need to clear brush and trees as well as build several ponds and straighten a creek. Which machine would be better for the job and why?

I would think the tracked loader would be better at clearing and piling brush. The bucket/blade is bigger and you can just quickly doze a wide swath through brush whereas the hoe is a more surgical instrument. A loader can remove trees too and do so somewhat more safely than a hoe (as long as it has a ROPS and screens). Although a hoe is better at removing the stump without all the dirt on the root ball - but a loader's 4-1 bucket can pick the stump up and shake most of the dirt off. Not sure about ponds, but if the hoe was big enough I would think it would be better. "Creek straightening" also sounds like a better job for a hoe, but hard to say without knowing more.

Although expect to pay more for a hoe than for a similar sized loader. I priced used ones and they are *expensive*. Plus I believe the repair/maintenance is more (especially for hydrostats vs powershift).

I would go with a track hoe, for these reasons; You can walk off an undercarriage on a track loader in an awful hurry , fuel usage will be lighter with a track hoe [ in most cases ].The track hoe will move more dirt faster and be able to cast it out of the way [ remember half the time on a crawler loader is in reverse, not doing a darn thing ]. The track hoe will be easier on your back than the track loader. Other than that , the loader is pretty good too.....
