Case 450B - no power

Hello again. It's been a while. I got my basement dug and the crawler I rebuilt has been running like a top. Maybe 20 hours on it now since in-frame overhaul. Decided to clear about one acre of my overgrown hardwood rain forest before selling the loader and getting out of the crawler business and get back to something I can afford. I was almost done when I decided to quit for the evening. Backed the rear up on a little slope, lowered the rippers and bucket and hopped off to let it idle and cool off for a minute. As I stepped out, I noticed yellow jackets swarming. I hopped off as a couple of them got me. I parked right over their hole - yikes. I figured let it run at low-mid idle for about 5 minutes while my friends cool off to. After a few minutes the engine speed dropped off suddenly and precisely. Like from maybe 900 RPM to 750. Not knowing what happened I got back on and looked at oil and temp gauges and both are fine. I raised ripper and bucket and goosed it forward to get off nest. No power. It would barely move and wants to die. I checked fuel level and flow out top of filter. Checked air filter. Find nothing. Engine speed will not increase. I do not have enough speed to do more than barely move. Feels as though it is running out of fuel. I did hop off and actuate the throttle lever by hand and engine speed will increase and hold RPM. But, it will not increase and hold RPM using the pedal or hand throttle. It was too dark to check linkages but everything seemed to be working. That is what I will check first when I get back to it. I have read somewhat similar posts over the years that leads me to believe the governor may have failed in the injector pump. Does this sound like what may have happened? If yes, is there any way to run it long enough to move it 100 yards? I would like to get it out of my SC rain forest so the skeeters don't tote me off.

Thanks as always for the help.

You mentioned in the post that you may be selling the 450B. I am looking for one, so email me if you want to sell.

Turned out to be a real easy fix. I spent 30 minutes packing up tools to go work on it and it took every bit of 10 seconds to spot the problem and another 7 seconds to fix it. The wire retaining spring on the throttle plate of the injector pump had come off. I sort of expected something like that after I thought about it. I remember a dead, dry stick jamming my injector pump a few running hours ago; funny the spring just came off now. Anyhow, thanks Dan and John for the advice. This time, I am glad I did not need it. Too wet to work today, so I'm working on 8N. It always needs something done to it.

Happy Saturday.

David, Some of the Case Crawlers with Detroit engines have a mechanical emergency kill switch on the left side of the motor that you may have to be reset most of the time the cable is old and has been discarded after a rebuild and may have only closed part of the way because of excess paint. Dan

David,

Actuate the hand throttle and watch the linkage on the injector pump. If its working okay then crank up the machine and try moving again. Be sure to check the injector inlet filter screen where the fuel feeds in.

Every time my 450 exhibits power problems it has been clogged filters/screens etc.

Best of luck,
John
