Front idler build-up

I have a CASE 310 crawler:

It looks as though the flanges are on both crawlers are worn thin. I don't know what new ones look like, but I suppose that they were thicker at the perimeter than mine are which are now almost knife edges.

I've noticed on other crawlers that the middle island on the idlers are solid. I'm wondering if I could take some 1/4" hot roll steel and form it around the idler over the flanges and weld it in place. This may give a little more life to the idlers.

Has anyone had experience in wrapping some strip steel around the idlers to build them back up. I could weld build-up it but it would take an enormous amount of time and then have to be smoothed after the welding.

How wide should the island or center rib for the idler be when new?

Alternately, I may try to find someone to roll flat stock 1/4" X 3/4" edgewise into a ring, and weld a ring to each side of the flanged island to widen it.

Anyone have experience in building up idlers and rollers on a crawler undercarriage?

Do you have an opinion on do's and don'ts when building back idlers and rollers? KRM

I appreciate the information from all of you. I, also, had some e-mails with pictures showing some repairs.

Tony K e-mailed some spectacular pictures of rebuilding his idlers in his home shop. It would be nice if he would post them so that we all could benefit.

Yea, TOny sent me some great pics as well.

TUrned out I was able to find new carrier
rollers for 80$ each, and just couldnt pass that
up, even though rebuilding mine is still on the
table, just a "someday" project now... :)
(ps, got mine at Weller Tractor Salvage)

When I rebuild idelers I rebulild them by welding. You can use a build up wire that is much harder than steel srips. If your not going to use the crawler too much, the strips should hold up good. I have never widened the island, it wont matter much unless it is really worn. I dont smooth the idelers out after i build them up, they wear in quick enough. I have a wire welder and it goes quicker thatn you would think to rebuild idelers for a D6.

I have done a few hundred in my day or so. They were built that way for whatever reason. To close them is also OK. But what do you mean by getting more life by doing the warp around the island. Not. How does adding more height to the island get more wear. I listed the specs for you earlier. The height is based on the distance on the NEW link height to the bushing. Once you the wear off ?? on links & idlers wear surface the bushing WILL ride on top of the island whichever design it is. So the higher or deeper the island the quicker the bushing will ride the island. Here is more info. The new dia. at the island. 19.687"
The new dia. at the wear surface. 18.50"
The new outer width of the idler at the wear surface. 4.140"
The new island width at the base(wear surface)is. 2.203" It tappers in as it goes up. That spec is not shown. It is around 20 degree tapper at a guess. Remember you have to have the same island deepth regardless of what you want to add to the island. Now depending on what the idler is casted from is going to directly decide what you can or can not do. All you need to use for rod is 7018.
Good luck HT

John,

As usual you have the dimensional information that I need, thank you.

Please don't lose that book with the data or a lot of people will have life a lot harder.

I welded flat steel like you are talking about on my 420C. It took some time but much cheaper than buying another idler wheel. Put it on and it is running as good as new. Hope this helps Paul
