I've got a customer with three of the CAT/Perkins 3054 turboed engines running air compressors on rock drills. The only problems he's had are the turbos going out due to the engines starting and going directly to 1300RPM and then shutting down from the same speed. Typically we're seeing about 9 months to a year out of the turbos before they get worn enough they need replacement. The biggest problem your gonna run into is support. Around here the CAT dealer tells me to call the Perkins dealer when I need info. Then when I call the Perkins dealer they try to help me but depending on the problem I often hear "CAT doesn't give us that information", and when I call CAT they don't seem to have it either. You'll find the majority of the parts have Perkins part numbers on them but you'll get a CAT parts book and service manual. Basically you've got parts with one number (Perkins) on them and a parts book with another number (CAT) for the same piece. It can be a real pain in the a-- if there is a problem because of the situation I just described about getting support/info on them. Just remember you can get parts through a Perkins dealer alot cheaper than through CAT. Just don't make the mistake of getting a completer kit and thinking your gonna have everything you need. Because they are a "hybrid", built to CAT specs, you might need pistons for model "A", the rods for model "B" and valves for model"C"...along with other various parts and pieces CAT speced differently. It can be a pain in the a-- but the last one I rebuild I did at about half the cost through Perkins and getting a kit and the other assorted pieces -vs- going through CAT and having to get every piece individually. Sorry to get so long winded there. They are good engines when their running, I just thought I'd clue you into what your looking at if you do happen to have a problem 'cause I've been there several times myself.

I think they are a good machine. Is it a 416 you are looking at?
Later Bob

Perkins has a good reputation otherwise "CAT" would never have purchased the company.I"ve got no trouble with my two Perkins engines. Udo
