We have a cat D6 9U that we have let sit for approximately 7-8 years for various reasons. Some time before dad got sick three years ago he had fired it up to run it a little. And he found that the right track was seized up then for some reason. It has dry clutches that maybe the culprit. I’m considering getting her running and work it a little this fall. At present it’s too hot to fool with it much. What pre-lube and steps can I do now to make it easier on me this fall when I start to play with it, hope I can remember how to run it.(maybe the bicycle principle will take effect) It probably has less than 100 hrs on total overhaul eng., rad, pony motor, u/c & ect. that dad and I done ourselves. Taking two and making one and replacing lots of new items. Thank you in advance for your valuable time and suggestions.

Confused, if you get the starting engine going, crank it over on DeCompression a while untill the oil pressure comes up on the diesel to get it pre lubed good. No more than 10 min with the starting engine though because the water isn't circulating untill the diesel starts. You may just have a brake band rusted to the drum. Hope the track pins aren't seized. Easy does it with old seized up stuff.

I'm no expert on cats, but if it has dry clutches, it is possible one or more has seized up from rust. From what I've heard if you partially fill the clutch cavity with diesel fuel with it properly sealed off so it doesn't leak, then that will help to break them free. Also pushing on something solid, like a big stump can help exercise them loose. You don't want to overdo it though, because you can blow a final drive, pinion gear or other driveline components by straining the machine too much.

If the tracks are rusted up and seized, I've heard squirting a mixture of diesel and a little oil (basically a penetrating oil) on all of the pins and links and letting it soak for a while really helps to loosen them up. Then gradually work the machine backward and forward until the track starts to roll freely, again without straining too much. And make sure the tension is not too high, better a bit slack then too tight.

Good luck, let us know how you make out.
