Hi, I just bought a jd350c with a backhoe. First dozer in our family. Undercarriage is about 80% but it has the wide swamp tracks on it. I am thinking I should put some narrower tracks on it for all around use (no swamps on our land!) so I don"t tear up the tracks and wear the rails etc. Just wondering if anyone has any advice about this- also what the swamp tracks are worth as well. Is it advised to just swap out the tracks without replacing any of the other parts? Thanks for any replies. Tom

Wide track 350"s are fairly rare - a least around here - I"ve only seen 1 in the last 30 years...
I think they were originally intended for use in deep SNOW and not much else.
I think the track gauge is 68" instead of the standard 48", so the whole track group is a different animal. I don"t know ALL the differences, but the front and rear cross bars are different for sure! The sprocket also has an outboard mounted support bearing on the track frame (similar to old oval track Caterpillars), so that"s a bunch of extra parts right there... the rails/chains are probably the same, so your 36" wide shoes could be replaced with the standard 12" shoes, but it would be a funny looking setup to say the least... Your blade is, no doubt, wider than standard, too.
The guy I know that had one ran a swamp/lakeshore dragline service, and his wide track 350 would just about float across swamp grass, mud, and snow, but it was almost useless as far as doing anything with it on dry ground - it was REAL hard to turn it, and although it had all the traction you could ever want, it was too underpowered to push that wide blade around even in a straight line, and he was always worried about bending the track shoes (or blade) on rocks and side hills - a lot of unsupported shoe hanging out there! My regular width 350C was MUCH more useful for everthing except actually working in the water.
I would not recommend using your widetrack for general dry ground work... maybe you can get a parts book and see what parts you would have to change to make it regular gauge and sell your wide track parts to somebody that needs them - I would think that they would be worth quite a bit to anybody that has a use for them.

thanks for the reply- the good news is the machine hasn't been used much lately, probably for the reasons you mentioned. I am looking for narrower tracks now.
