I"m looking at a ca 1950 D4 with 5F-1R tranny that"s in reasonable shape but according the the owner jumps out of 1st gear now and then under no load but holds in gear when pushing. If any of you have had a similar problem, is this a bearing or wear-related problem that will require pulling the engine in order to get to the tranny? Any chance this is just a shift mechanism problem? Thanks in advance,
Larry

Larry, I think there should be an interlock to prevent shifting untill you release the flywheel clutch. Try adjusting it. Look for a linkage from the clutch lever to the trans. Later Bob

Bob,

Thanks, I"ll check it out this weekend. Tracks are in great condition, so I"d like to pick this up if the tranny problem is minor.

Larry, disconnect the linkage and move it back and forth untill you find where it locks the shifter rails. Then adjust the link untill it locks when the clutch is engaged and unlocks when the clutch is released.

Bob,

Just took a look at the D4 again. The interlock blocks Reverse from going into gear, or from being taken out of gear, unless the clutch is released. The interlock prevents 1st from going into gear, but doesn't prevent 1st from being taken out of gear. The interlock has no effect at all on 2nd - You can put it in or out of 2nd regardless of cluch position.

Does this seem to indicate the problem(s) are most likely in the interlock and shifting mechanism - ??

Thanks, Larry

Larry I think the inter lock might be worn out. It's a shaft with grooves cut into it to lock the rails in place. When the clutch is released the grooves allow the rails to move. Did you take the linkage off and try it?

Larry, just pull the pin out of the link and move the interlock lever untill it locks all the shifter rails in the gear you put it in with the engine not running. If you can do thay and adjust it to that you will be okay. If you can't adjust it then you need a new interlock shaft. Get me the serial# and I will check out the parts for you. Email me.

Bob,

I see now what you're saying - the interlock actually keeps the transmission in 1st gear by blocking the shifter rail from moving until you release the clutch. Sounds like this could easily be the problem, I'll check it out....
Thanks again.

Hector,

I understand about disengaging the various gears and comparing, but I don't understand when you say, at the end, if only 1st is easy, "that should the first gear use". Can you or someone clarify?

Thanks for the help,

Larry
