hello, i am in the process of having fifty acres of woods clear cut at ground level. ground is clayey and stump size range from six inches to twenty three inches. trees are ash, oak and soft wood. would the one shank ripper on the d8h be able to cut the roots and what will happen if the shank hits a 16" hardwood stump head on?

thanks guys for the follow ups. i've decided to get the d8 and use it to remove the stumps. i had toyed with the idea of leaving the stumps there and grinding them except there's so many of them and they say rocks hurt the stump grinders. besides, big dozers are fun to drive. lol
thanks again

Hi, James. Let me see if I understand you correctly here. You are having your timber clear-felled, cut at ground level and you want to know if a D8H with a single shank ripper will do the stump extraction honours. If I've got it correct, I'd say yes, it will remove the stumps.

However, contrary to some people's opinions, if you hit a 16" hardwood stump at full throttle, even in first gear, with that single ripper shank, you WILL know it. You would do both yourself and the D8H a favour by using your eyes to find the stumps rather than the ripper. Then apply the ripper to lift them out.

If you do have to use the ripper as an exploratory tool, I'd suggest you exercise a little restraint in the 'noise' department - throttled back. Even some softwoods can have a pretty firm grip on terra firma.

With the bigger ones, you may have to rip right around them to sever all the surface roots before you will be able to pull or push them out.

Leland's suggestion of a rake instead of a blade to clean up is a good one but it would need to be a good rake or it may cease to be a rake and become a pile of scrap steel with a D8H pushing it around.

Hope this helps.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

If you hire a D-8 there should not be any stumps that big as he at idle can push most trees over stump and all and instead of a ripper you need a root rake much faster than a ripper and will save you money in the long run less hours you pay for removing roots.

Why not use a D8H with a root plow it is faster and does the job better.

I used to clear land for a living. If the trees are cut off at ground level, some of them might not be easy to get out, even for a 46A. You may need to use the ripper to cut some roots, but it will do the job. If your root rakes are built like the brush rakes that we have in this part of the country, I would use the blade to dig out the stumps so you don"t bend the rake. You can put the rake on later to clean up. I would leave the stumps at least 2 feet high so they are easier to dig out. Good luck with your project!
