Have a JD 350B diesel with power reverser and power steering, has a loader on it .Other day unit was sitting idleing and the engine died ,thought it had run out of fuel, engine did not make any noise or anything just died. Put fuel in it tried to start ,would not turn over engine stuck ,pulled starter, starter checks out good. Tried to turn over with pry bar on ring gear at opening for starter, engine will not move ,stuck tight. Any body know what could have happened? Engine was in good condition ,used no oil,did not smoke ,starts good even in cold weather. By the way it was not out of fuel.

Hi Guy, I would go with the advice of Jonathan in MA. If you haven't pulled the engine yet, try taking off the timingcover/pin abd look in between the flywheel and the rear of the engine. You can often see parts of the driven disc or torsional isolator stuck in the balancing bores in the flywheel. I had a similar experience to yours and am replacing the driven disc. Do pull the flywheel for the few minutes it takes. I would also replace the pilot bearing/bushing for the low cost. It can help to preserve your reverser. Take a good look at the front seal on the reverser while you have it out. good luck.

has anyone done any welding on it recently? A bad ground will sometimes arc across the crank bearings & ruin them, locking up the engine suddenly as if someone killed it by pushing the lever down.

What usually happens with those is that the "isolator" comes apart...Its the joint between the flywheel and the reverser input shaft. Its comprised of large springs that hook around protruding studs on the flywheel and are hooked to a smaller disk that is splined to the reverser shaft. The springs come apart and get stuck between the flywheel and the bellhousing. To repair , you have to remove the engine and replace the isolator springs and anything else that was damaged. Make sure you remove the flywheel to ensure there are no pieces behind it. I've seen pieces left in there , only to fall out after reassembly and lock it up again.
