I was at a friends place last night for a few cold ones and he mentioned some recent goings on with the 1965 1010 he's had for a few years.

Apparently it will start up and you can put it into gear, but it does not want to move unless you idle it way down. He told me that this became progressively worse until it currently stopped moving. It's been in regular use since he bought it, doing work around the home he built in his off time, I said I'd mention it here to see if anyone had an idea what it might be. This one has no reverser, I'm not familiar with the JD's, he's got the books on it and has rebuilt the motor recently and certainly mechanically apt, but any advice is hightly appreciated, thanks !!

If it got progressively worse, and will only pull a little a low rpm,I'd have to vote for a clutch disc or pressure plate/flywheel. Good luck!

That was my guess, just that it went into gear smoothly, but I'd think that'd be the best place to start.

If it is a reverser crawler, it has no clutch or pressure plate. If it is a reverser crawler, has he changed the filter lately, or checked the fluid level? If the filter is plugged, or the oil low, it will not develop enough pressure to engage the clutch discs.

Lavoy, I believe it is without the reverser, I've ran it on occasion, it's a direct drive 4 spd. trans., if I recall correctly, just the transmission lever and a pedal clutch. While not familiar with the JD's all that much, I assume that it's a dry clutch assembly, by the brief description given, it would have to think it would be in the clutch assembly, it does go into gear, and will apparently move at a low idle, which got progressively worse until now. I'd think if the clutch was failing, it would be hard to get into gear, but in case there was a possibility of some other issue causing this, I'd thought I might ask here, and especially appreciate any insight provided. He's got the books on it and it's not too far from the garage so I'm sure we'll get in for a look, but I'm no expert on the JD's though. I just got the upper bell housing off my D-7 to do a clutch replacement, when it rains it pours !

If the pressure plate is bad it still goes into gear with no problem, it just breaks free when the engine is accelerated under a load. If the pressure plate fails or is failing, its just like pushing the clutch in. Remember the pressure plate is what mechanically connects the fly wheel to the transmission to route engine power to the drive train. The clutch is there to allow a smooth start during engaement.

A reverser crawler will have a lever on the LH side of the dash to shift the reverser. Also, when you push on the clutch pedal, it will feel weird because it is just actuating a valve, not actually pushing against a pressure plate.
