The short easy answer is that Dresser never made dozers. International Harvester sold the line to Dresser in the 80's. The product continued to be made by the same people but under new managment. As I recall it was 1990 or 1991 when Dresser entered into a joint partnership with Komatsu. I believe it was just a name for the transaction to get under the trust regulators because a year later Komatsu quietly bought out the rest of Dresser's interest. A few years later Komatsu merged the Dresser line into their own but in a funny way. The Dresser models TD7, TD8 and TD9 became as I recall Komatsu D32, D38 and D39. They were still the same design of tractor. The Komatsu line was still D31 and D37. The Komatsu machines designs were kept seperate from the Dressers.

Now the manufacturing plant in Poland somehow has been able to distribute the same line under the Dressta name, I haven't a clue how that happened. Possibly they are making the larger dozers and wheel loaders that Komatsu has no interest in.

At any rate the old International line of dozers was as good as any other dozer in that size class ever made. They were a simple design that was reasonably easy to troubleshoot and repair. There a lots of units built in the sixties and seventies still making money today.

So I should not worry about buying:

IH, Dresser or Dressta?

I should be able to get parts for all of them from a Kamatsu dealer?

ETD- Below is a link to the Dressta corporate site. As you can see they're still in business and carry much of the same line that has been out there under the IH and then Dresser names for years and years (and in some cases, for decades, as with the 175 loader).

It may be getting harder to find parts for the machines made twenty or more years ago. They used a German made engine and a different transmission. Parts are available, you will just have to wait longer and pay more for them.

You will have to concentrate on the condition of the machine you thinking of buying. If everything is worn out you will have problems. If you can find one that has been sitting for years you might get lucky. You will still have to fix it but you may only have to fix a couple of things for less money.

Just remember a machine that is sitting around for years isn't there because there was no more work for it. It was usually because they couldn't afford to fix it.

Good Luck!

My neighbour recently bought what I think is a dresser dozer. I can't recall seeing any decals but it looks a helluva lot like the one in the pics. I remember that thing being chalk full of levers! Anyways he works his in his pit and man that thing is a tank. Does an awful lot of work with it and has yet to break down. It's an old old machine but she runs like a top. He's pretty happy with it and from what he tells me he didn't break the bank buying it either. Just my two cents.

I have had good luck with Dresser and International products. They are still being made by Komatsu and a Polish company a joint venture. They are now called Dressta.
I have a TD15-C, a good machine. There are a lot of used parts available. There is a company in Tenn. that specializes in new final drive parts, transmissions etc. just for TD15's and 20's. I have done business with them, I'd highly recomend them.
Good luck!

Yeah, I'm really starting to like TD15's the more I look into them, like the one below.

Some of the dealerships do,I quess it depends on their franchise agreement. Try to outsource any of the parts you need, from aftermarket suppliers if possible,OEM parts are very expensive, and usually have to be ordered. At least that has been my experience with the local Komatsu dealer.

Ok, just wondering.

Might have a part to play in whatever dozer I choose to go after.

For some reason the bigger Dresser's seem to be cheaper than Cat's, so they look attractive to me, unless getting parts for them is a nightmare...

Mid 1980's TD15C's seem to be priced very reasonable, moreso than Cat's of that size & vintage...

ETD - If you want to learn more about Dresser (and Dressta) stuff go to the redpower site referenced below. There is a guy named Rocko there that works at a Dressta/Dresser parts distributor in Canada and he has the full skinny on Dresser stuff. From what I've heard the parts are still available and still being manufactured, plus the machines are reliable and strong running. But you can talk to him and get the lowdown, he's very knowledgeable on the whole Dresser line and parts availability.

Just had some undercarriage work done on my 450B Deere. At a large dealer that handles Deere, Komatsu, Dresser, etc. Got to talking to the mechanic , told him I was thinking of upgrading in a year or so. Asked him his opinion of good used machines. He said definitely look at Dresser. Claimed they hold up well and don"t come in very often. ( I suppose that could be because there aren"t as many, I don"t know.) I guess they aren"t as hard to work on as some.
