Curious about rippers

Do they make rippers for my machine? It's a Case 450. If so any idea where to find 'em and also would they work alright? I would imagine a 450 would be a bit small for a ripper. Also, what's the idea behind a ripper? How do they work? Are they just supposed to rip up the ground so the blade can push it all over? Just wondering about 'em is all.

Case450: can't comment on ripper availibility for your specific machine, though from the looks of the other posts they are made. The page below gives a good overview of rippers in general. In addition to what they mention, rippers are frequently used for cutting tree roots prior to stripping and/or stacking the soil in an area to be cleared. A ripper works well to make a smaller dozer capable of doing more work by loosening the soil, enabling the blade to fill on a subsequent pass.

Hi Case450,
I have rippers on my 1979 450B loader. They are a Case factory brand ripper, model 450. They are a five shank deal with a single cylinder. They may not have been on my machine from the factory as the hydraulics work from a double selector valve in the bucket tilt function. If they came factory I would expect that the machine would have had a different hydraulic control valve. They work great. I made the shanks for mine out of plate steel because they were missing. I expect the original shanks were forged. But, mine have held up fine for pulling rocks the size of a kitchen table. I saw a ripper for a Case 550 on ebay some time back. Went very cheap. Keep your eyes open. I suspect you would have to do mods on the rear though.

Good luck.
