Roy,he said he had final drive off on side that quit but didn't touch steering brake.Can it be hyd. related? I looked at his JD tech. manual but ag. tractors is all I'm familiar with and it's been nearly 20 yrs. since I worked as a service mngr.Thanks for any help,Jim

Kinda tough to remove final drive without removing set screw, whether or not brake was messed with.. You have to remove upper shaft to remove final drive. To do so the set screw must be removed. Or force it off, I guess anything is possible.....To install the set screw , Line up the set screw with the plug that sits on an angle directly above the final drive housing. I use a 3/8" bolt with appropriate washers to space drum in the center of the upper shaft opening , without encroaching in on the splines. Once the upper shaft is inserted remove the 3/8 bolt and tap lightly on the shaft till you can see a flat area on spline thru thread hole. Run the set screw in till you see the shaft or drum move in or out till it bottoms out. I like to " snug it up " then back it off slightly, then tighten nut down..
