Hello,
I just bought a 450B with a hole in the engine block. I am wondering if any John Deere 219 diesel engine will fit in this machine? Can I find a block for this or do I need to buy a whole replacement engine? Anyone had any luck placing a patch over the hole in the side of a block? (The piece that got broke out is gone) I live in north Iowa and am just trying to figure out the best and most economical way to get it up and running. I have lined up a good diesel mechanic who lives close to work on it. Any advice and experience would be greatly be appreciated!
Frank

To repair hole in the block; If hole is not adjacent to side rail it may be repaired in the tractor if there is enough room to weld. Find a piece of cast iron at a local wrecking yard. Trim piece to fit break in block. Grind the joints in a 'V' or 'U' shape. Obtain 100% nickle rods 3/32" in diameter. Do not preheat any of the parts. Turn amperage up to just enough to flow the welding rod material. Peen welding area after 1" of progress. Do not stop welding until entire job is done. Repair to be done in a draft free environment and covered with rockwool insulation until cold. Have fun.

I once repaired a hole in block in a D-6. A piece of piston skirt broke off, laid on the sheet metal piece of oil pan, then got launched thru block when the crank/connecting rod hit it. I used a piece of 1/4" plate just slightly larger than hole. I used stainless rod on repair. To my knowledge it's still there..

I purchased a 350 JD 20 years ago from a friend who repaired a bullet hole in the block with a piece of steel cemented in with Devcon, and it's still in place. Now my reverser went TU.

The 450C uses the 219 engine so it should fit in the B without a problam the trany is the same. If the piece out of the block is not something critical then a piece of steel could be brazed in to fill the whole so the block could be used. That might be able to be done with the engine in place.
