450's are a good machine. the transmission isn't near as complex as 550 series machines.Don't get me wrong, they still are a bugger to overhaul. But , I would rather do one of these than 550 transmission. Pay particular attention to the engine frame rails where they bolt to steering clutch housings and to front crossbar for breakage. they are well known for this problem . Check transmission for proper operation. Does it slam into forward high from reverse? or vice versa. It needs a transmission adjustment. You should be able to shift this machine forward high to reverse at wide open throttle. You should be able to shift from reverse to high at wide open throttle without snapping your neck off. You shouldn't shift HLR using clutch pedal. Just move the HLR lever in crisp, definate shifts. Another thing to look at is the engine speeds in different HLR ranges. Put the 4 speed transmission into neutral between 3rd and 4th. run engine at 1000 rpm, shift the HLR from reverse to high forward then to low. Does it pull the engine down excessivly in one range than any other ranges. ? Possible clutch pack problem with warped clutch plates causing 2 clutches to apply at the same time. Undercarriage worn out will cost a bunch to replace..Take someone that knows these machines with you to check it out. I.ve seen many a person get burnt buying an oinker thinking it was a nice piece....A paint job hides a multitude of sins.. Buyer beware..Good Luck.
