580 Case (no letter designation) will not start. Previous owner wore out starter and ring gear trying to start it. Have fuel to injector pump but nothing to the injectors. Is there a filter screen in the injector pump? Can I visually see if the pump is turning by removing some inspection cover???? Where do I go from here?????

If you do find fuel before and after your injection pump bleed the lines at the block where the lines go into the motor. Make sure that the flow is really good at all points. I had problems with my crawler and it was because there was junk in the fuel tank (from local punks) and a small pebble lodged itself in the fuel line immediately after the glass bowl on the bottom of the tank. The motor would run but if you tried to increase the rpm's it would die and if it did manage to go anywhere it had no power whatsoever. My machine is acting up again so now i am going to be changing all my fuel filters in the morning. I hate doing fuel jobs in the mornin' on account of the smell. You end up smellin' like diesel all day!

I seem to recall on my Case 188 that there is a small screen filter inside the injector pump. It should be located where the fuel line comes into the injector pump from the second filter. There was a nipple on mine that unscrewed and allowed access to the filter.

You need to have a good clean (free of air bubbles) stream of diesel flowing to the input of the injector pump.

If all that is clear then you"ve most likely got an injector pump problem. I suspect if you take out the pump and take it to your local Case dealer he can test it for you. I"d guess most any diesel injection shop would be able to rebuild yours.

Best of luck,
John

I had a Case 188D do that once and I took the cover off the injector pump and the rack that slides back and forth to shut off fuel was struck n off position. I just moved it with a screw driver and it slid over. put the cover on and started her up. Could be your problem. Good luck Jim

should be a 2 screw cover on side of pump.you can tell if pumps turning with it removed. fuel should run out too. is fuel shutoff moving back and forth? i assume its a push pull hookup.

If you definitely have fuel to the pump (and the circuit/filters are purged of air), try cracking the lines at the injectors. Then crank the motor until you see some fuel. After fuel is visible, retighten the injectors lines and try to start it again.

Already cracked the injector lines and no fuel. Fuel is good to the pump? How do you troubleshoot the injector pump?

I wish I could help you more, but I'm not really a diesel expert. By coincidence I ran my (diesel) tracked loader out of fuel just yesterday for the first time. It was facing uphill so I had to put 20 gallons of diesel in the 30 gallon tank before it would bleed fuel from both of the fuel filter canisters (the filter canisters have air release valves on the top of each one). After I bled the air from both filter cans, and had a decent amount of fuel running out of the vent valves, I then cracked the inlet line going to the pump. I opened it fairly well too, not just barely cracked. I could see bubbles and air coming out along with fuel. I kept bleeding it until all I saw was fuel and no more air bubbles. Then I cracked three of the six injector lines (where they go into the injectors themselves), and turned it over a bit. I could see wetness around one of the loosened injectors while cranking it, and then also heard it sputter just a bit. So I tightened all of the lines back up and then she fired right up after that.

Are you sure this machine only has run out of gas and it's not something more serious? Also running it for a few moments on ether (starting fluid) may help to get it going, but I've heard mixed things about using ether on diesel engines (i.e. some say its ok, others say its not, but everyone says a lot of the stuff is BAD).

Good luck
