Bought an old 440ICD and can not get the engine to turn over. What voltage is the starter circuit for this machine. Also, how many batteries are normally used, one or two? Starter will engage but engine will not turn. Previous owner said it ran last month. Is there some form of compression release?

Another question, does the machine use a positive or negative ground? Maybe I have the battery wired wrong? I have it as a negative ground.

about the + or - ground.....

It has been a long time for your machine in this world. The old generator may have been replaced by a prior owner with an alternator from Delco. Not an uncommon modification, and if so, then probably it would have a - ground, becuase that is how the Delco alternators are set up. So, look at the generator or alternator, and work from that direction to figure out what grounding you have. Or tell us more about the setup at that end of the machine, electrically, and maybe we can assist.
Best Luck!
Matt

From the factory, the 440ICD had a positive ground, if I recall correctly.

Can you get a pipe wrench on the shaft between the engine and hydraulic pump and see if you can move the crankshaft a little?

Matt:

My thought exactly, but could not get a wrench on the shaft due to the radiator being in the way. Will reverse the polarity on the battery and see what happens.
