JD 350 reverser rebld. ?

I'm rebuilding reverser clutches from my 350, as per the JD manual. When it comes to checking/adjusting endplay with the clutches installed in the housing, I have a question. The manual says to leave the seal out of the rear quill until endplay is correct. Seems to me that pulling the bearing cup from the quill to place the seal and reinstalling the cup and quill will upset the endplay. Anyone with experience have a comment?

Deere is telling you such so you don't damage the oil seal. Since the entire input/output shaft assembly's endplay is determined by the shim-pack in the rear quill, you might have to remove and reinstall it several times before you've got it correct. Endplay is critical in this reverser since it is weak to start with - especially if it's an older/early 350 or 1010 with the smaller bearing in the front drum of the imput shaft. Don't rely on "feel" to set the endplay - it's an invitation to failure. Use a dial indicator.

I did think I misunderstood the manual re: the effect of removing the bearing cup to install the seal after shimming for endplay. Never had to do that in other applications. I have a dial indicator as per the manual. Thanks for your advice.

If the cup is seated properly, and the quille is installed and torqued, removing the cup won't change the endplay.
